Prana

The invisible river of life that powers magic and sustains the spirits of heroes across time.

Prana is the fundamental life energy and spiritual fuel that permeates the world of Fate Grand Order, serving as the essential resource for all magical operations. It flows through living beings and the land itself, acting as the bridge between the physical realm and the spiritual plane where Servants reside. Without a steady supply of Prana, a mage cannot cast spells, and a Heroic Spirit summoned into the modern age would quickly dissipate back into the Throne.

Lore & Background

For Servants, who are spiritual constructs summoned from the Throne of Heroes, Prana is their very existence. Unlike living mages who can regenerate their supply through rest and food, a Servant requires an external source to maintain their form. This is why they rely on Masters to feed them Prana or draw it directly from the environment via high-density Ley Lines. If this flow ceases, the Servant's connection to the physical world breaks, leading to their dissolution.

In Their Own Story

The air in the ruined library tasted of ozone and old dust, a sharp contrast to the fading warmth of the Master's hand on her arm. She felt the familiar drain, the hollow ache where Prana had been siphoned away to fuel the final barrier against the Phantasmal Beast. Her Servant stood tall before her, armor gleaming with an ethereal blue light that was not fire, but pure, condensed life force. 'Do not fear,' the Hero whispered, their voice echoing with the weight of a thousand years. 'As long as you breathe, I shall draw from your soul to protect this world.' In that moment, the invisible river surged between them, binding master and servant in a pact older than time.

Reader's Guide

Prana functions as the universal currency of magic within the Fate universe. For human mages, it is generated internally through the body's Magic Circuits but can be amplified by drawing from external sources like Ley Lines or magical artifacts. In combat and summoning, Prana dictates the scale and potency of spells. A larger output allows for more devastating attacks or the materialization of powerful Noble Phantasms. However, excessive usage without recovery leads to physical exhaustion or even death for human casters. Servants are entirely dependent on this energy. They consume Prana continuously just to maintain their spiritual forms in the modern era. Masters act as conduits, channeling their own life force to sustain their summoned heroes, making the relationship a delicate balance of mutual reliance and sacrifice.
